Fred Wilson

<p style="margin-right: 0px; But you will find no music and no film clips, due to copyright restrictions. What we think of as our common cultural heritage is not “ours” at all.

On MySpace and YouTube, creative people post audio and video remixes for others to enjoy, until they are replaced by take-down notices handed out by big film and record companies. Technology opens up possibilities; copyright law shuts them down.

This was never the intent. Copyright was meant to encourage culture, not restrict it. This is reason enough for reform. But the current regime has even more damaging effects. In order to uphold copyright laws, governments are beginning to restrict our right to communicate with each other in private, without being monitored.

File-sharing occurs whenever one individual sends a file to another. The only way to even try to limit this process is to monitor all communication between ordinary people. Despite the crackdown on Napster, Kazaa and other peer-to-peer services over the past decade, the volume of file-sharing has grown exponentially. Even if the authorities closed down all other possibilities, people could still send copyrighted files as attachments to e-mails or through private networks. If people start doing that, should we give the government the right to monitor all mail and all encrypted networks? Whenever there are ways of communicating in private, they will be used to share copyrighted material. If you want to stop people doing this, you must remove the right to communicate in private. There is no other option. Society has to make a choice.

The world is at a crossroads. The internet and new information technologies are so powerful that no matter what we do, society will change. But the direction has not been decided.

The technology could be used to create a Big Brother society beyond our nightmares, where governments and corporations monitor every detail of our lives. In the former East Germany, the government needed tens of thousands of employees to keep track of the citizens using typewriters, pencils and index cards. Today a computer can do the same thing a million times faster, at the push of a button. There are many politicians who want to push that button.

The same technology could instead be used to create a society that embraces spontaneity, collaboration and diversity. Where the citizens are no longer passive consumers being fed information and culture through one-way media, but are instead active participants collaborating on a journey into the future.

The internet it still in its infancy, but already we see fantastic things appearing as if by magic. Take Linux, the free computer operating system, or Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Witness the participatory culture of MySpace and YouTube, or the growth of the Pirate Bay, which makes the world’s culture easily available to anybody with an internet connection. But where technology opens up new possibilities, our intellectual property laws do their best to restrict them. Linux is held back by patents, the rest of the examples by copyright.

The public increasingly recognises the need for reform. Too many services imitate, and only a handful innovate. With all of these services, one wonders what their plans are for success. Competition on the web is stiff and users are demanding more from the services they join. While there's no formula for success, there are three keys to a killer web service: search, aggregation, and conversation. In this post, we take a look at successful services that have integrated these keys just right.

Facebook

While everyone has their opinions about Facebook's future and we've given recommendations on how to make Facebook useful again, there's no denying that Facebook is a success. Facebook's integration of search, aggregation, and conversation is a winner in anyone's book.
在《how to make Facebook useful again》一文中，我们提供了一些建议。
Search
Their search feature is very useful for exploring every nook and cranny on Facebook. These days, tracking someone on Facebook is as easy as finding that same person on Myspace. Facebook's search feature is stalking at its best.
Aggregation
Facebook has been great with aggregating personal content since its all exclusive launch. With the addition of a plethora of great Facebook Apps to help out, aggregation on Facebook has only gotten sweeter. They've recently opened up the Newsfeed to include web 2.0 services Flickr, Picasca, Yelp, and Del.icio.us. While we didn't think Facebook's news feed was open enough, it was a huge leap for Facebook. Coupled with the Facebook Apps that integrate Twitter, FriendFeed, and more into the service, aggregation is becoming a strong area for Facebook.
Conversation
There's plenty of conversation about Facebook and on Facebook. The Wall application is one of Facebook's most popular features and definitely enhances the service. Really, Facebook speaks volumes in this area, so we won't bore you with a rehash.
Twitter

Our beloved Twitter has received a lot of complaints in the past week for its downtime problems. Non-Twitter users even may wonder why we put up with the service. Three words: search, aggregation, conversation.
Search
The integrated search function on the Twitter site isn't all that useful. It took over a year for the feature to be implemented and like Facebook, Twitter apps do the job better. While search is basic on Twitter, search engines like Summize, Terraminds, and Tweetscan do more than enough to solve the various problems that Twitter's official search engine doesn't. With these search tools, you can better see what people say when they tweet, track your brand on Twitter, and more. In fact, two of these engines are Twitter's most popular tools, helping to make Twitter a killer service.
Aggregation
Twitter doesn't discriminate on what you can add to the service. Pulling in feeds from other sites and pushing them to Twitter is simple. Since Twitter doesn't do this by default, you'll have to use one of the many twitter tools available such as Twitterfeed. Grab the RSS feed of any service you'd like to aggregate on Twitter, plug it into Twitterfeed and you're good to go.
Conversation
Twitter is one massive conversation in itself. It's a communication tool so of course conversation is a focal point that Twitter is most successful at. However, what's so great about the conversations is the wide variety of topics and "tweets" being sent through the service. Content may be king for blogging, but conversation is the king for Twitter.
FriendFeed
FriendFeed
FriendFeed is this year's Twitter, which was last years innovator. While FriendFeed may be a duplicator in some ways of other services before its inception, there's no denying that it's now the top social aggregator and a service that's gaining a lot of steam.
Search
FriendFeed is the child of some of Google's best engineers. Consequently, the search engine on FriendFeed is fantastic. Users have a multitude of ways to search for things such as going through your own aggregated items for something, searching your entire network of friends or one person, and even using the search to find something within a specific service.
Aggregation
FriendFeed is a social aggregator. What can't you import to FriendFeed if not through the various integrated services then via the "imaginary friend" feature? Enough said, don't you think?
Conversation
FriendFeed has some of the best conversations on the web. Not getting enough comments on your blog? Head over to FriendFeed to find them. Members of FriendFeed congregate not only around various popular blog articles, but also Twitter messages, shared items and more. In contrast to Twitter, FriendFeed's conversations are a lot more organized and logical. Where Twitter conversations can be noisy, FriendFeed conversations would be the exact opposite: valuable.

Continuing Success
Search, aggregation, and conversation are the focal points of today's web services. There are more blogs, alternative search engines, and aggregators then ever before. These are just a handful of services that have taken off. While these may be the keys to a great beginning, in our next post we'll follow up with the keys to expanding the success of a service. Until then, we'd love to hear your thoughts on what some other keys to success are and what keys help with the longevity of a service.

To Beat Google, Beat Google to the Mobile Web
Google
When I read news this morning that AOL's Platform-A would become the exclusive ad provider for Virgin Mobile's 5 million subscribers, I started to think about where web advertising was headed. While it's doubtful that we'll be permanently ditching our PCs any time soon, it is clear that more and more time is being spent accessing the web via mobile devices. So it would follow that the mobile space is going to see a lot of ad money over the next few years (indeed, analysts predict just that).
We've reported that the mobile web is exploding in the US and that 58% of American adults are now using their mobile phones for things other than voice communication. The proliferation of the web on mobile and non-PC devices was one of the three big opportunities that Tim O'Reilly outlined in his keynote speech at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. One only has to look to Japan to see where mobile is heading in the future. There are more mobile web users in that country than there are PC based Internet users, and phones are used for everything from checking email to paying for train tickets.
So the mobile web is likely going to be a significant part of our future, which is good news for advertisers because there's one other thing we've been learning about the mobile web: people using the web on mobile devices are much more likely to interact with advertising. According to one publisher average click through rates are 2-8% for banner and text ads. But more creative ads are seeing response rates as high as 29% on average.
Even though full web content is now 77% of that accessed on mobile (as opposed to under a quarter of mobile content via WAP), it seems clear that the type of traditional advertising that works on the web, isn't the best fit for the mobile platform. Which brings me back to my original point: to beat Google, you have to beat Google at its own game. No, not search -- well, okay, maybe search too -- you have to beat Google at advertising. With so much advertising projected to shift to the mobile web over the next few years, the company that can corner the mobile web ad market is going to be able to go toe-to-toe with Google. Right now, it's still wide open.
Do you use the mobile web? But it’s unlikely that our children’s Internet will look anything like what we have now.

How might the Internet as we know it die? Here are 10 possibilities.

Someone subverts the Domain Name Service. The Internet relies on DNS. But if someone broke — or worse, subverted — the fundamental way in which we find web sites, we wouldn’t trust URLs any more. Phishing would be easy. Own the DNS and you own the Internet.

Zombie networks attack! Untold numbers of enslaved PCs are waiting to do the bidding of shadowy hackers. Matt Sergeant of MessageLabs puts the size of the Storm botnet at between five and 10 million machines (though others peg the size of the network at much less.) Today, bots fill our inboxes with spam. But in the past, they’ve been used to take out companies and countries and to blackmail sites. In the end, it’s an arms race in which only one side has to play by the rules.

Massive physical infrastructure failure. If an accident involving a couple of cables in the Mediterranean can make the Internet unusable for hundreds of millions, imagine what an intentional attack could do.

Death by a thousand fragments: Ever since Usenet, people have been grouping together with those who think like them. In his book “The Big Switch,” Nicholas Carr cites one study that claimed more than 90 percent of the links originating within either the conservative or liberal community stay within that community. Some link referral tools can even be configured to keep visitors on sites with the same world view. The end result? Islands of like-minded people, increasingly sure there is only one right answer and that they’re in sole possession of it. And an end to the dreams of a global community envisioned by the Internet’s creators.

A really good virus breaks the routers. The Internet’s self-healing mechanisms rely on the Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP. But what if someone gets inside the routers? In a 2006 NANOG presentation, Cisco looked at claims of vulnerability and concluded that “the most damaging attacks are caused by the deliberate misconfiguration of a trusted router.” Corrupt BGP, and you not only stop the Internet from forwarding traffic, you interfere with our ability to get to the routers and fix them.

Updates break how updates work. Most software these days is designed to patch itself and remain current. But sometimes the process of automated upgrades triggers its own problems. On Aug. 16, 2007, Skype went down in what the company claimed was a side effect of a massive automatic update to Windows. It’s only a matter of time before an update makes a fundamental piece of software, like a networking stack, unable to update itself, cutting off millions and requiring manual intervention.

The Net stops being neutral. If the carriers start to charge us for access to sites the way cable companies charge for premium television, pretty soon you’ll have a “Google fee” on your monthly bill. This already happens with many mobile phones that feature the services of Facebook and YouTube. It’s perhaps the most insidious death, because it would signal the end of innovation — no one would be able to launch the next Skype, Twitter or YouTube without the tacit approval of carriers.

The lawyers get involved. The Internet has been an experiment in free speech. That may be coming to an end. Unable to go after the sites themselves, lawyers go after the hosters and registrars. That’s how Swiss banking group Julius Baer took whistleblower Wikileaks off the air. And once there’s precedent, others are sure to follow. The recording industry is already wondering if it can go after carriers for enabling copyright infringement. This is the irony of Net Neutrality: When telcos start treating different bytes differently, they aren’t “common carriers” and may be liable for what they transmit, including illegal content. So they’ll comply.

Walled gardens: Many countries already restrict how the Internet is used. China’s firewall — which includes 30,000 people tasked with finding improper users — is a good example. But the Internet is a tool for social change and revolution that could threaten any government. Imagine, for example, a U.S. Congress that outlaws online pornography and blocks known adult sites (which accounted for 18.8 percent of all web visits in 2004, according to Hitwise, although the U.S. government says that figure is actually a mere 1 percent.) Instead of a global Internet, we’d have a return to localized standards of decency imposed by legislators. It’d be like “Dirty Dancing” all over again.

Humans take themselves out: As Discover Magazine pointed out years ago, we’ve got plenty of ways to do ourselves in, from nukes to plagues to sucking ourselves into a black hole of our own making. And what’s an Internet without users?

The Internet has already morphed from its initial aspirations of open academia to a commercial platform controlled by corporations and carriers. In many ways, the time between the start of ARPAnet in 1969 and the end of Netscape this past February is just a brief period in history that the Facebook generation won’t miss.

from playin' with IT by keso

2
In short, I heard the typical conspiracy theories of any one-party state unable to reach beyond the logic dictated by its own need for control.
(from Seth Godin's Blog)
You can improve your writing (your business writing, your ad writing, your thank you notes and your essays) if you start thinking like a blogger:

1. Use headlines. I use them all the time now. Not just boring ones that announce your purpose (like the one on this post) but interesting or puzzling or engaging headlines. Headlines are perfect for engaging busy readers.
2. Realize that people have choices. With 80 million other blogs to choose from, I know you could leave at any moment (see, there goes someone now). So that makes blog writing shorter and faster and more exciting.
3. Drip, drip, drip. Bloggers don't have to say everything at once. We can add a new idea every day, piling on a thesis over time.
4. It's okay if you leave. Bloggers aren't afraid to include links or distractions in their writing, because we know you'll come back if what we had to say was interesting.
5. Interactivity is a great shortcut. Your readers care about someone's opinion even more than yours... their own. So reading your email or your comments or your trackbacks (your choice) makes it easy to stay relevant.
6. Gimmicks aren't as useful as insight. If you're going to blog successfully for months or years, sooner or later you need to actually say something. Same goes for your writing.
7. Don't be afraid of lists. People like lists.
8. Show up. Not writing is not a useful way of expressing your ideas. Waiting for perfect is a lousy strategy.
9. Say it. Don't hide, don't embellish.

What would happen if every single high school student had to have a blog? Or every employee in your company? Or every one of your customers?

log001

单词：
crowdsource
kudos

—— from keso
—— from 薛涌

听：
1 somebody's me （那些歌，那些人，那些纠缠的感情）

Bill Gates
-June 2003, eBay acquires Eachnet, the largest e-commerce website in China. Within two years, the Chinese company, TaoBao.com held 67.3%. Eachnet dropped to just 29.1% of the market share.
-Yahoo tries to make a go in China. Can’t compete with Chinese rivals. Alibaba.com acquires Yahoo! China in 2005.
-In 2004, IAC/Interactive bought a controlling interest in then leader eLong.com. eLong was promptly overtaken by rival Ctrip.com.
Alibaba.com 在 2005 年收购雅虎中国。

Slide 3:
-Google has gone from being a market leader to having just a fraction of the share of Baidu.com

Slide 4:
So why does it happen?
-There are some commonly held beliefs in the West that are not quite right.
-Chinese companies’ main advantage is in protectionist measures by the government
-There is such a huge cultural divide
-China is basically an inscrutable country/marketplace

Slide 5: “The Perfect Storm”
- China has….
-A great influx of V.C.
-Excellent computer science/engineering talent
-An incredibly entrepreneurial population of young people comfortable with not having standard career paths
-A telecommunications infrastructure that is far beyond its development in other areas
-and a population without a lot of money

Slide 6:
The Big Problems
-Localization/Partnerships
-Top executives are entrepreneurs
-Misguided or irrational hiring practices
- Western companies just can’t bend the rules like domestic companies can

Slide 7:
Still a developing country
-China’s population of Internet users is nearing 300 million, but they are not white collar people from Shanghai and Beijing.
-Foreign companies and their Chinese employees have failed to connect to the vast majority of this group.

Slide 8:
What should a site look like?

Slide 9:
What services matter
-When they tried to enter the China market ICQ spent a lot of time and money trying to ensure user privacy.
-Tencent QQ grabbed an advantage by assigning numbers rather than making users choose an “alias”

Slide 10:
Netizens can’t spell G-O-O-G-L-E
For most Chinese netizens, spelling “google” is sufficiently difficult as to warrant a switch to baidu.com or hao123.com

Slide 11:
Web Users Don’t Like Type
-Compared with web users in the west, Chinese have a very high tolerance for extended browsing but try to avoid typing.
-As a result, companies like Google are adding predictive text functions.

Slide 12:
What does work? ?
-The most important key to success is giving ground operations the freedom to react in a timely manner, and respond to the needs of the specific market
-Google China has 20% policy that is expected to pay dividends
-MySpace China will be basically autonomous.
- Google
- Myspace

Slide 13:
Can Chinese companies win abroad?
Baidu is looking to take on Google and Yahoo in the Japanese market, but will lose some of its advantages.
Chinese may truly take leadership position on mobile social networking
-mobile infrastructure
-fewer privacy concerns

Facebook to Crowdsource Chinese Translation - China Launch Imminent?
Written by Richard MacManus / March 31, 2008 1:35 AM

Following on from our Q&A with Benjamin Joffe about how Facebook compares to top Asian social networks, Kaiser Kuo from Ogilvy China Digital Watch reported today that Facebook users in China "received a message on their main pages this morning asking them to help out with the translation of the site into simplified Chinese". Kaiser calls this a "a very Web 2.0 approach to the arduous task of translating the site." This is the latest example of speculation that Facebook is about to enter the booming China market.

Also fueling rumors that Facebook will launch in China is a report from Marketwatch stating that Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing has increased his personal investment in Facebook to more than US$100 million. Sounds impressive, however his initial investment had been $60 million for just 0.4% of the company - remember it has a $15 billion valuation. So he probably hasn't even cracked 1%.

Benjamin told us in our interview that currently "Facebook has almost no presence in the three markets we cover: China, South Korea and Japan." In China, QQ is the dominant player with 300 million active accounts. MySpace has a presence in China, but according to the Forbes report linked above, it "hasn't been able to steal significant market share from any of the top Chinese social-networking sites since it launched in China a year ago."

We reported in November that Facebook made an $85 million offer to purchase Zhanzuo.com, a leading Chinese social network with 7 million users. Nothing appeared to come of that though.

Forbes noted that Facebook currently has 247,000 members from China. If you browse Facebook, you'll come across Chinese language users in Facebook. So this move by Facebook to crowdsource the site translation would be one step in formalizing that user base. But there's still the matter of monetizing and doing business development in China, which would require an office and staff there.
Can Facebook Be Competitive in China?

It would be fascinating to see Facebook try to enter China, a Web market that is very tough to succeed in for Western companies. This was one of the main themes to come out of the recent Media 08 conference in Sydney, at which I met both Benjamin and Kaiser. Indeed a presentation at Media 08 by Jonathan Haagen, an analyst from the Economist Intelligence Unit, was entitled Why Western Tech Companies Fail in China(!) I've embedded it below, because it's well worth Facebook's execs reading it ;-)

Facebook

From translation contest of PROZ.

original：

Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.

On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

译文：

1：

<img width='1' height='1'
